Happy New Year!

Most people start the New Year off with resolutions. Resolutions to loose weight, save more money, learn a new language and so on. Why don't you make your resolution to learn MORE GEOGRAPHY! Not only will you become more knowledgeable but you can also use your "new smarts" to profile future girlfriends or boyfriends. What better way to get to know someone better than by asking them a geography question. If they know the answer, then maybe they're worth a few more dates.

Making Inexpensive wall maps

There are a lot of times when folks need a wall map of a certain country or foreign city. These maps are either unavailable or prohibitively expensive. We came up with an option to smooth out a folded map and laminate it. It's not as nice or as big as a "wall map" but for a lot of situations, it's just what's needed. Sometimes we can take 2 folding maps and piece them together front-to-back. Recently, we used this map of Nepal to help and organization pinpoint all their missionary schools. And we try to have every country available. Here is a link to our map-of-maps.... http://www.mapshop.com/Travel_Maps/world-travel-maps.htm

I love Greenland in the Springtime
Rarely do we receive requests at our retail store for maps of Greenland. Not a lot of trips there I guess. We searched for a long time and finally found a small wall map of good quality that was published by the Danish Government. Recently it became unavailable through our international map distributor. Naturally we were contacted by a customer that does work in polar regions wanting to buy that map. The Map Shop to the rescue. In the meantime we had found a paper folding map of Greenland published by International Travel Maps(ITM)that is colorful and clearly shows the geography with interesting notations on the map. For example: "By the early 17th century the Danes had annexed Greenland because of the islands importance to Denmark's whaling interests. In 1953 Greenlanders became full Danish citizens, and in 1979 they were granted home rule, which means the island handles its own domestic affairs while Denmark oversees international matters such as foreign relations and defense". We took the ITM map, flattened it out and laminated it, and it was transformed into an attractive wall map that proved to be very useful to our customer. I did notice however that the map didn't show any roads between towns or settlements. Want to see the ITM map of Greenland? Just order Product ID: 9781553415619, US$9.95 from www.mapshop.com. If you have something interesting to share about Greenland, let us hear from you. Learn more about Greenland at http://www.worldhum.com/weblog/category/C206/

Accuracy of on-line maps
All the on-line maps are generated from one of two national databases. The street data has to be filtered thru a large organization before it ever shows up on Mapquest or Yahoo. We like to tell map customers "You get what you pay for".

Rand-McNally
Why do so many of our customers assume that any map made by Rand-McNally is superior?? It's just not always the case. A map made by a local publisher is often more up-to-date and detailed. When it comes to World and US maps, Rand's are good but National Geo's are better. For some applications, even Michelin's are better. Look at them side-by-side here to compare..
